Caring for Collections - A Manual of Preventive Conservation
The Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works in Ireland organises Caring for Collections courses annually. As museum staff appreciate that they are ultimately responsible for the artifacts in their collections, they seek advice for appropriate direction and care , many want training in this area. However, the Institute presently does not have the resources to expand the course, either in terms of treating each topic in greater detail, or enlarging the syllabus. Taking these considerations into account, the Institute readily agreed to co-operate with the Heritage Council of Ireland in the publication of Caring for Collections, A Manual of Preventive Conservation. The Institute believes that the message will now reach a wider audience, who will feel reassured that their problems are not unique, but shared by many others, and that a common sense approach to these problems will contribute much to the preservation of their collections.
The book aims to inform the general reader of the basic concepts of collection care and good housekeeping. Through it, it is hoped that it will enable people to plan for the long-term future of their collections in an informed way, within the resources available to them. The book is structured into four sections dealing with The Building and The Environment, The Contents of a Collection, Managing Collections, and When to Use a Conservator. In addition, evaluations are given on what is considered a collection, a museum, what is preservation and what is collection care policy. It also provides advice about how to look after a collection. The book includes a useful glossary of terms, covering a broad range used within the conservation profession. A list of suggested further reading is provided together with reference material, useful addresses and a bibliography.
